The earcups now fold inward, a welcome return after the XM5’s non-folding design, making storage easier. The redesigned headband has a flatter profile, distributing weight more evenly across the head, while the soft synthetic leather earpads provide a plush seal without feeling heavy.
Though largely plastic on the outside, Sony used recycled materials in construction, balancing eco-conscious choices with durability. The matte finish looks fantastic but as you can see here in our photos, darker models show smudges more easily.
Ergonomics and Comfort
Comfort is where the XM6 excels. The clamping force is light yet secure, so the headphones stay put without squeezing. The headband padding is wider and flatter, which prevents pressure spots on top of the head.
The earpads use soft memory foam wrapped in synthetic leather, molding to different face shapes with minimal adjustment. The only drawback is the relatively shallow depth of the earcups.
Users with larger ears or glasses may notice occasional contact with the inner drivers. Still, the forgiving foam helps reduce pressure, making the fit comfortable even for glasses wearers.
Compared with competitors, the Bose QuietComfort Ultra or the AirPods Max are plusher, but Sony is not far behind and represents a big step up from earlier models. Overall, the XM6 can be worn for multi-hour flights, workdays, or study sessions without discomfort.

Sony’s new carrying case is slim, rigid, and closes magnetically instead of with a zipper. I really liked the magnetic clasp. You can open and close it with one-hand but it’s also secure enough for travel.
Inside, molded compartments hold the folded headphones, cables, and an adapter neatly. The case is durable without being heavy, fitting easily into backpacks or laptop bags. Combined with the lightweight body, the XM6 is one of the most travel-friendly premium headphones available.

Detailed Sound Quality Breakdown
Sony tuned the WH-1000XM6 for mass appeal with a warm, engaging profile. Yes, like their predecessors they are a bit bass bloated, but they still provide a more satisfying listen than most competitors in this headphone class.
I still wish they would carve out that bloat around 100 Hz and separate the sub-bass more. The good news is that they are responsive to EQ adjustments.
The mids are smooth and clear, with vocals sounding full and slightly warm. Male voices benefit from added richness, while female vocals remain articulate, though not as forward as on neutral-tuned headphones.
Treble is balanced, with enough brightness to keep details like cymbals and string plucks audible but without sharp sibilance. Also like the earlier versions, they have a very warm roll off at the top. This safe tuning suits extended sessions.
Soundstage and imaging are average for closed-back headphones, but Sony enhances immersion with virtual modes and 360 Reality Audio. While it won’t rival audiophile headphones, the XM6 delivers a very solid, enjoyable, and versatile sound for most genres.

The XM6 does not drastically change the overall tuning of the XM5. Both share the same warm balance with strong bass and smooth mids. The differences are refinements: increased sub-bass and marginally clearer mids.
They also have slightly higher maximum volume.
Side-by-side comparisons reveal the XM6 edges out the XM5 in terms of imaging but the overall audio quality differences are marginal.
Best EQ Settings for Audiophiles
Sony’s companion app introduces a 10-band EQ if you don’t have a preferred EQ control already. The XM6 responds well to EQ without distortion.
For a more neutral presentation reduce the 63 Hz and 125 Hz bands by 3-5 dB to tame and separate the bass. I also like to drop the mids (300-500Hz) by about 2 dB. This adjustment clears some mud from the overall sound.

Noise cancellation is where the XM6 leaps ahead. Equipped with a new QN3 processor and 12 microphones, the system processes external sound nearly seven times faster than the XM5. In lab tests, the XM6 achieved around -28 dB of average noise reduction, outperforming nearly every competitor.
Low-frequency rumble from planes and buses is effectively silenced, matching Bose’s performance in this range. The biggest gains are in midrange and vocal frequencies, where chatter, crying, and office noises are significantly reduced compared with the XM5. This improvement makes these headphones the best ANC we have tested to date.
High-frequency attenuation also improved, cutting sharp noises like clattering dishes or HVAC hiss more effectively than rivals. The adaptive NC optimizer automatically adjusts cancellation depending on ambient conditions, even accounting for air pressure on planes.
One weakness is wind resistance: heavy gusts produce microphone rumble. That said, this is common among ANC headphones without a dedicated wind mode.
Real-World Usage
In practice, the XM6 creates a remarkably quiet bubble in almost any environment. On commutes, engine and rail noises are nearly erased, leaving only faint traces of announcements or horns.
In offices, background conversations and typing fade to near silence, allowing focus without raising playback volume. I tried these out on a 9 hour flight and the engine drone was almost completely removed.
Improvements to the Ambient mode also impress. Users can select from 20 transparency levels, ranging from subtle background awareness to near full passthrough. You might look strange keeping your headphones on while conversing, but with these cans, it sort of works.
The Voice Passthrough option emphasizes speech clarity, useful in office or travel scenarios. While Apple’s AirPods Max still lead in the most realistic transparency, Sony’s implementation is close and highly usable.

For XM5 owners, the upgrade is barely worthwhile if call quality, folding portability, or the very best ANC are priorities. Otherwise, the improvements are incremental. Owners of older models like the XM3 or XM4 will find the XM6 a dramatic leap forward in every respect.
If sound is your highest priority, the Focal Bathys are the still the best ANC headphones. The AirPods Max, though not at the level of the Bathys, also outperform the XM6 in overall audio performance.
